By the late 1990s Kim Jong-nam was living the life of an international playboy. He was reported to have voracious appetites for alcohol and women. That wasn’t all. “He did like to treat his friends to the talents and favours of ladies of the night,” says Michael Madden, a North Korea expert at the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. The overweight gambler and fading playboy had kept his head down in recent years from his base in Macau. Kim Jong Nam was seen by many outsiders as only a minor distraction for North Korea’s leaders, and certainly not an existential threat worth the risk of a potentially embarrassing assassination caper on foreign soil.
